The lead developer in the Union Market area has brought on a top New York architect to design a new project in the Northeast D.C. neighborhood.
Edens unveiled plans at a neighborhood meeting Tuesday for a 568K SF project, designed by SHoP Architects, that would include an apartment building and an office building with an archway connection above the New York Avenue-Fourth Street NE intersection, UrbanTurf reports.
The buildings would be 130 feet tall, include about 360 units, office space and ground-floor retail. The multistory connection between the buildings’ upper floors could feature public space and food and beverage offerings on the rooftop. It was designed to serve as a gateway to the Union Market neighborhood from the busy New York Avenue corridor.

SHoP Architects has designed major New York projects including the Barclays Center, and it also has a project in Brooklyn with a similar arch-style design as the Union Market project. In D.C., SHoP designed the Midtown Center office project and is designing a building in The Wharf’s Phase 2.
Edens expects to file a planned-unit development for the project in the coming days. The PUD process has led to appeals that have delayed several previous projects in the Union Market neighborhood. The neighborhood has welcomed two new apartment buildings with retail this year, both of which Edens partnered on, and it has several more developments in the works.
