The DC Office of Planning put a halt on a big mixed-use project in Tenleytown. Planning staff didn't give a reason for opposing the plan.

In 2013, the Georgetown Day School bought the Safeway at 42nd Street NW and Davenport Street, a WMATA chiller plant, and a car dealership on Wisconsin Avenue, which the school submitted plans to replace with two mixed-use properties, Greater Greater Washington reports. GDS also wanted to consolidate its lower and middle schools into one building.

That project would've called for six- and seven-story buildings, each to hold 270 to 290 units, and 22 to 29 of those would've been permanent affordable housing. It also would've provided 39k SF of retail space.

Two community groups, Neighbors of GDS and Wisconsin Avenue Gateway Groups, opposed the plan because the residential building designs were too tall. GDS wants to resubmit plans with one fewer floor on the northern building and two fewer on the southern building. [GGW]
