An international hotel brand focused on attracting young vacationers — and offering a suite of esoteric amenities to do it — opened in D.C.'s Union Market neighborhood this week.

Selina Union Market, located at 411 New York Ave. NE, brings 106 new rooms to the growing submarket in a building developed by Brook Rose Development and D.B. Lee Development.

The flagship hotel features amenities like a resident DJ, a four-story courtyard mural, an "on-demand concierge mobile IV" from Pure Drop IV and a "downstairs cellar for dancing" while also providing business amenities like coworking spaces and private meeting rooms.

"Selina couldn't be a more perfect fit for the building," Brook Rose said in a statement. "The property has an authentic industrial feel that naturally translated into an exciting hospitality space."

The developers first partnered with Selina, which operates or is contracted for more than 155 locations, in 2019. Virgin Hotels had previously tried to land a location at the site, but questions over its financing ultimately led the developer to seek a new operator.

Rose told Bisnow the design team punched a hole in the former warehouse to construct a courtyard. The building's design elements also nod to its past as a seed factory and artist space, according to a press release.

Hospitality's rise has been slow but steady the past year after the pandemic forced a major drop in revenue.

And despite fears over inflation, some believe D.C.'s tourism industry is in for a strong summer, thanks to its wealth of free attractions on the National Mall.

The Selina will offer budget accommodations for travelers in search of a deal: Beds in a shared-style room will go for $50 per night. Other options include a private loft for $500 per night or a standard room for $200 per night.

Selina joins brands like Sonder and WhyHotel in expanding and angling for travelers searching for unique accommodations within D.C.
