When Jared, eating oysters out of Samish Bay, started JR Properties DC last year with cousin and partner Curtis Jablonka, the emerging firm focused on small multifamily projects. It recently transitioned to larger deals via assemblages, having bought nine DC properties in 2014 that will primarily turn into higher-density mixed-use projects. Not bad for a guy who says he “just stumbled into real estate.” After growing up in a small town in Ohio, he moved to DC on a whim, got bored at his first job here, quit, and bought a house in Columbia Heights. He fixed it, sold it, and ended up doing 20 more. Eventually he moved into the bigger projects. Best lessons: Persistence pays off and being nice to people helps.
