Northern Virginia could soon welcome a new shelter for over 400 unaccompanied minors as part of the federal government's ongoing efforts to house immigrants crossing the U.S.' southern border.

The General Services Administration issued a presolicitation Friday seeking to lease roughly 110K SF for up to 15 years beginning in July 2020, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The GSA is launching the search on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services. Its search encompasses the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William and the cities and towns of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Herndon, Vienna and Manassas.

The 110K SF facility would need to have 275 parking spaces and 2 acres of outdoor recreation space. The plans include roughly 18K SF of interior space for recreation, classrooms and multipurpose rooms, plus 7K SF of administration space, 5K SF of dining space, 3K SF of medical space and 12 bathrooms.

The facility is expected to employ 147 staff and house up to 440 unaccompanied children, consisting of children under 17 who entered the country illegally without their parents or guardians. The GSA set an Aug. 13 deadline for expressions of interest.
