Arlington officials are planning to add 15,800 units of committed affordable housing over the next 25 years. The plan would take the county's dwindling stock of affordable units—staffers estimate Arlington will run out of market-rate affordable units within five years—and give it turbo fuel. If the plan passes when the Board deliberates this fall, the county would have a total of 22,800 affordable units in 2040, or 17.7% of all residential units, ARLnow reports. Many residents are skeptical of the plan because it likely comes with a steep price tag and Arlington doesn't have any estimates for the impact it could have on its overcrowded schools. Some locals have pinned the cost of the loans Arlington would dole out at $54M per year.
