Work has started on the new Pike Place MarketFront, an expansion of Pike Place Market on Western Avenue that will provide a connection to the waterfront. The project is turning a quarter-acre surface parking lot into a public plaza with views of Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains; table space for farmers, craftspeople and artisan purveyors; low-income housing; a neighborhood center; and 300 public parking spaces. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016, to open before the final demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
