NASA’s Newest Frontier: Housing For Silicon Valley

More office and housing could be landing at Moffett Field in the next few years. NASA wants to build 1,930 housing units on 45 acres at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale and is looking to partner with a developer, according to the Mercury News.

In nearby Moffett Fields II, Jay Paul Co. has started construction of its second eight-story office building at 1100 Discovery Way, adding more office to its massive project in the area. Google also is planning a separate 1.1M SF office project that would include 300 units of modular housing at the edge of Moffett Field.

Individuals who work or go to school on Ames-owned property, up to about 8,000 people, would be given priority for the housing units, likely to be rentals, from NASA. Workers would include NASA civil servants, contractors and others employed by organizations at Moffett. The government agency will begin searching for a developer this fall. Of the housing, 10% would be affordable. The project also would include 100K SF of retail and be built within three to five years.

Jay Paul Co.’s new building at Moffett Field II will replace a 924K SF Lockheed Martin building and is expected to be completed by July 2019, according to contractor Level 10 Construction. The office is expected to have a café for Amazon Lab126, which occupies a building in Moffett Towers, the Mercury News reports.

Other amenities at the campus will include a recreation space, an outdoor amphitheater and a 52K SF fitness facility with a swimming pool. The campus will span 47.4 acres and contain five eight-story buildings, two of which will contain rooftop gardens.
