Downtown Sunnyvale To Get A New Movie Theater

AMC Theatres is headed to downtown Sunnyvale. CityLine Sunnyvale has signed a lease with the movie theater chain to share a building with Whole Foods Markets. The under-construction mixed-use transit-oriented development will offer housing, retail, entertainment and office space on 36 acres.

The two-story building at Murphy and McKinley avenues will have an AMC Theatre occupying 52K SF on the second floor and the Whole Foods occupying 52K SF on the ground level. Construction is expected to begin in the next few months with completion expected by summer 2019. The theater will have 12 screens with Dolby Cinema and IMAX upgrades on two screens. The theater will offer a full-service bar and reserved seating.

CityLine Sunnyvale is being developed by STC Venture, a JV of Hunter Storm and Sares Regis Group of Northern California. The project includes $20M in public improvements, which are under construction. These include the temporary reopening of Redwood Square for public use, an extension of Murphy Avenue to connect with McKinley Avenue and new landscaping, street trees, traffic signals and landscaped medians. Target and Macy’s remain open at CityLine Sunnyvale.

STC Venture recently requested an amendment to the Downtown Specific Plan to add 350K SF of office and up to 650 residential units above ground-floor retail at McKinley Avenue. If approved, the community would surround a public plaza.

Cushman & Wakefield Executive Managing Director James Chung represented CityLine Sunnyvale on the lease, while JLL Executive Vice President and Retail Brokerage Lead Craig Killman represented AMC.
