Uptown Oakland could soon get its first hotel. A JV of Signature Development Group and Jordan Real Estate Investments plans to build a West Elm hotel in the up-and-coming district. The 150-room hotel at 2401 Broadway will be part of the Hive development underway at Oakland’s former Auto Row.
The hotel, designed by BAR Architects, will include ground-floor retail, a 4K SF indoor and outdoor bar area, indoor and outdoor meeting areas with gardens, a lobby café with outdoor seating and 70 adjacent apartments. The project will incorporate the historic façade from the 1910 Beaux Arts building designed by Bay Area architect Frederick H. Meyer.
“We feel right at home in Oakland, a city undergoing tremendous change and growth,” West Elm Hospitality Vice President Peter Fowler said. “Its influences are felt in technology companies, a wonderfully diverse maker culture and art scene, and, of course, its pioneering food movement.”
The nearby Hive project will include a 105-unit residential complex, 100K SF of office space, a beer garden, a coffee shop, an ice cream parlor and upscale restaurants.
This hotel would be the retailer-turned-hotelier’s sixth proposed hotel. West Elm plans to open hotels in Charlotte, Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Savannah. The Oakland hotel is expected to open in 2020.
