PG&E To Install 7,500 EV Charging Stations In California

Pacific Gas and Electric is all revved up to install thousands of EV charging stations. The California utility received the go-ahead from the California Public Utilities Commission last week to spend $130M on 7,500 charging ports for electric vehicles within its coverage area of Northern and Central California, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. This move will be the country’s largest utility-backed network of EV stations.

Charging stations will be installed at workplaces as well as multifamily developments. Roughly 15% will be available in low-income communities as part of the state’s efforts to make electric cars more accessible.

PG&E will own up to 35% of the charging stations while the rest will be owned by building owners or other third parties. The owners will have the option of paying for the electricity on behalf of the tenants or making drivers pay as they go. Regardless of who owns the station, PG&E will own the wiring and infrastructure supporting the stations. [SFC]
