Solana Beach Exploring New Senior-Care Facility

Plans For A Solana Beach Senior-Care Facility Off Interstate 5

A proposed senior-care facility could go up in Solana Beach if the community votes in November in favor of zoning changes for the vacant lot where the project would go.

The city's general plan zones the 2.9 acres at 959 Genevieve St. with a third of the density it would need to house the two-story building with up to 99 beds, the Del Mar Times reports. The project would be built along Interstate 5 and could serve a segment of the community with limited housing options, according to the project's development team, led by Pacific Sound Investment's John DeWald.

Solana Beach has little land on which to build and its senior population is expected to double between 2020 and 2035, according to the San Diego Association of Governments. That growth is more than the community's single senior-living facility can handle; it has a waiting list for its 105 beds.

There are two workshops this month to get community feedback on the project, which would provide services including memory care, housekeeping, meals, laundry, transportation and entertainment. The first draft of the Environmental Impact Report is complete.

If voters approve the specific plan for the project, it will go before city council and the California Coastal Commission.
