Portland Among The Top Tech Cities In The Country

Portland ranks No. 14 among the top 25 U.S. tech cities, according to Cushman & Wakefield's new Tech Cities 1.0 report. The top tech cities were determined by analyzing talent, capital and growth opportunity.

San Jose was first, followed by San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Boston/Cambridge and Raleigh/Durham. But, the report noted, mass-transit issues and escalating housing costs in those areas have fanned a tech spillover into other markets.

Portland’s tech market has grown significantly over the last several years, both organically from companies homegrown in Portland as well as attracting major national firms to the market,” said Doug Deurwaarder, an executive director in Cushman & Wakefield’s Portland office.

“In part, this growth is driven by Portland being relatively affordable when compared to its West Coast counterpart cities. Fortunately, the talent pool continues to get deeper, giving companies comfort they can attract top talent.”

In the top tech markets, tech plays a large role in the city’s economic trajectory. It is also a vibe. In certain cities, tech is more deeply woven into the fabric of the city, and it is dramatically shaping those local real estate markets.
