Anthropic, the company behind AI chatbot Claude, is expanding in Greater Boston as the region competes for a larger share of the booming artificial intelligence sector.

The San Francisco-based AI company has signed a 24K SF lease at Alexandria Real Estate Equities' One Kendall Square in Cambridge, The Boston Globe reported. The company plans to move early next year into two floors of the 667K SF office and lab building.
Anthropic's local employees are currently based out of a WeWork in Central Square. The company moved into the coworking space last year and began actively hiring, and it now has about 50 employees there.
The Kendall Square space will allow the company to more than double its local team, with room for 120 people, the Globe reported.
“Cambridge is a natural place for Anthropic to put down roots,” Anthropic co-founder and President Daniela Amodei said in a statement to the Globe. “It’s where some of the world’s leading life science researchers are using Claude to accelerate their work, among the more than a million people across Massachusetts who now use our products.”
Anthropic's deal comes after some smaller AI firms have expanded in the Greater Boston area.
At the beginning of the year, Related Beal secured a 40K SF lease with biotech company AI Proteins at its One Kenmore Square office property in Boston.
In April, vibe coding company Lovable signed a 6K SF lease at DivcoWest's 1.1M SF One Lincoln in Boston's Financial District. The company said it has plans to scale in the space.
Though the city has seen a meaningful uptick in tech leasing, Boston is still playing catch-up to San Francisco and New York in the AI sector.
Since 2020, $578B in venture capital has been funneled into AI companies, with 80% of those funds going to companies in San Francisco alone, according to CBRE.
