App That Helps Millennials Cope With High Rents Comes To Portland

Roomi — a roommate-matching app already in play in other high-rent U.S. markets — is expanding to Portland. Founder and CEO Ajay Yadav said the app aims to meet a need created by the market's escalating rents.

One way to cope with the headache of high rents is through co-living. As rent continues to climb in major U.S. metros, more Americans are opting for shared accommodations than ever before, Yadav said.

Upon registration or placing a listing, users answer personality and lifestyle questions, as well as the more standard location and price range inquiries. Roomi translates these answers into a detailed profile, allowing users to search for housing and housemates who meet their needs and preferences.

After experiencing 13% user growth in 18 U.S. and international markets in the last year, and raising $6M from DCM Ventures, Roomi plans to expand this year in other markets. Besides Portland, it is also rolling out in Denver and Las Vegas this month.
