New Name For Hilton Portland Honors Oregon Suffragist As Part Of Major Renovation

The Hilton Portland & Executive Tower in Downtown Portland will be renamed The Duniway, after the Oregon women's rights activist of that name, when it opens in the spring following a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renaming is part of a larger effort to give the property more localized features, which is an ongoing trend for hotels, especially in the upper reaches of the hospitality industry.

DesignAgency is redesigning all of the guest rooms at the hotel to reflect "an inspiration from nature and the city's industrial past," reports Travel & Leisure. The rooms will feature books curated by Powell's Books. The hotel also will soon open Jackrabbit, a new restaurant from chef Chris Cosentino.

Abigail Scott Duniway was a 19th-century suffragist who was instrumental in Oregon being the seventh state in which women could vote, which happened in 1912. The Duniway won't be the first Hilton property to be renamed in this way: in San Antonio, a DoubleTree by Hilton was recently unveiled as the Emily Morgan Hotel, named after a folk heroine identified with the song "The Yellow Rose of Texas."
