The second casino to be built within Philadelphia city limits is on the cusp of breaking ground.
Stadium Casino LLC, a joint venture between Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment and Cordish Cos., received permits from the Department of Licensing & Inspections to demolish the Holiday Inn at 900 Packer Ave. near the sports stadium area to make way for its development, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
The 200K SF development, which has been rebranded from Live! Casino to Stadium Casino, will have 205 hotel rooms, 2,000 slot machines, over 150 table games, five restaurants, multiple nightclubs and a parking garage. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this year, and completion is estimated for 2020.
The operators of SugarHouse, the first casino in Philadelphia, had filed suit to block Stadium Casino from receiving a gaming license, but a new Pennsylvania law allowing more licenses statewide caused them to drop the suit.
Since then, it has been all systems go for Greenwood and Cordish, the former of which owns and operates Parx Casino in Bensalem. Cordish owns and operates the Xfinity Live! entertainment center in between the Philly stadiums.
