Some neighbors are opposing the Irvine Co.'s proposed 1,710-apartment community near Sand Canyon Avenue in Irvine.
At a meeting held earlier this month, residents expressed concern about increased traffic as a result of the proposed project, the Orange County Register reports.
The Irvine Co. wants to build the development, known as Spectrum 7, on 70 acres it owns that used to be the site of the former Traveland USA near the I-5 freeway. The proposal would require the city amending its general plan.
The company also wants to build 250 condos and a 10K SF childcare center on its 20 acres of vacant land at Sand Canyon and Great Park Boulevard.
The apartments would consist of studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, ranging from 500 to 775 SF with rents that could range from $1,425 to $2,200.
Irvine Co. officials say the apartment community would mean about 25,000 fewer daily car trips than building the 955K SF of offices the current zoning allows.
The Irvine Co. plans to hold a series of meetings for local residents.
