Midwood, a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Brooklyn, is the perfect place for families looking for a place at the corner of urban and suburban life. Its name comes from the Dutch word "midwout," which means middle woods.

The largely Orthodox Jewish neighborhood also has an eclectic mix of Chinese, Turkish, Pakistani, Polish, Russian and Bangladeshi residents, along with some lifelong New Yorkers.

There are few rental buildings, with most rentals residing in multifamily homes, and the price of a typical two-bedroom rental has risen from $2k to $2.5k in the past year. The median sales price for homes was $794k between Jan. 1 and July 31 of this year. That's up from $710k during the same period in 2014. Meanwhile, condos and co-ops saw a slight dip in median sales price, with co-ops dropping from $210k to $198.5k, and condos going from $540k to $537,636.

You'll find Jewish bakeries, bagel shops, food stores, kosher restaurants, and shops on avenues M and J.
