The acclaimed pedestrian plazas in Times Square may be going dodo bird extinct if Mayor Bill de Blasio gets his way. The plazas, which were created by Mayor Bloomberg to cut down on traffic in the world’s most crowded tourist sport, has attracted a bit of controversy of late as…let’s say “less than wholesome” citizens have made the plazas their place of business. While de Blasio has admitted the plazas do have a “positive impact” and said that getting rid of the plazas may be better for business, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton was more frank, saying the city should just dig the plazas up. City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, on the other hand, is not so on board with de Blasio and Bratton’s plan, saying that doing so would directly oppose de Blasio’s own initiative to eliminate traffic-related deaths.
