A plan to redevelop the Bedford Union Army Terminal in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, is running into a snag.
Last week, facing opposition from groups demanding a higher share of affordable housing than a current plan to redevelop the site calls for, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration canceled a public hearing on the redevelopment.
An official with the city’s Economic Development Corp said the hearing will likely be bumped up to early March, Politico reports. A few days earlier, a Freedom of Information Law request signed by Rep. Yvette Clarke, state Sen. Jesse Hamilton, and assembly members Diana Richardson and Walter Mosley requested projected profits on the project, a timeline and penalties for "failing to live up to any of the terms of the agreement, including timeline, affordability of apartments, quality of construction, et cetera."
It’s not clear whether the FOIL request is related to the cancellation of the meeting. Local community activists have criticized the proposed project since its initial unveiling in 2015.
The plan, as it stands, calls for 165 rent-regulated rental units and 12 condos for low- to middle-income homeowners. Developer BFC Partners plans a 542k SF affordable and market-rate development on the site, which has been vacant since 2011. [Politico]
