New York University has filed plans to build a 23-story, 558k SF mixed-use building at 181 Mercer St.

The facility is the first of several buildings in the university’s Greenwich Village campus expansion, which was delayed due to a zoning battle with local residents. The expansion’s site—owned by the Department of Transportation—was originally designated as parkland. Although the NY State Court of Appeals sided with the university, NYU agreed to build one building at a time, The Real Deal reports.

Divided between a north and south tower, the property was designed by Davis Brody Bond and Kieran Timberlake, and will replace the Coles Sports Center at the recently demolished 404 Lafayette St.

The facility will house classrooms, dorms, common areas, study rooms, practice rooms, a café, an athletics center (with an Olympic-sized pool, an indoor track and exercise rooms), a performing arts facility and a 556-seat theater. [TRD]
