A pair of developers wants to use a historical quirk of the Meatpacking District as the legal basis to add a few floors to several buildings.
Aurora Capital Associates and William Gottlieb Real Estate note that in 1937, the owner of 52-58 Gansevoort lopped off the upper floors of a tenement to build a multi-story meat and fruit emporium. The neighboring building followed suit in 1940. Now Aurora and Gottlieb want to bring them back.
Their plans call for renovating two historically significant buildings in the district without altering their height, while turning three two-story buildings on the block back into four-, five- and six-story structures.
Unsurprisingly, some residents aren’t too jazzed about that. For now though, we’ll just have to wait and see how the Landmarks Preservation Commission rules on the matter. [Crain's]
