The Archdiocese of New York, St. Batholemew’s Episcopal Church and Central Synagogue want to sell their air rights to developers who own properties whose land doesn’t border their own. St. Patrick's Cathedral has about 1.2M SF of development rights—about as much space as the Chrysler Building. The city’s program to transfer air rights from landmarks has been around since 1968, the Wall Street Journal reports. Only 10 projects have been built under the program, and none since 2009. Archbishop Timothy Dolan has raised the issue with the Bloomberg Administration and it was on the agenda the first time he met with Mayor de Blasio at the cardinal’s residence. [WSJ]
