One of the founders of West Chelsea’s for-profit Avenues: The World School is considering opening a new venture in Tishman Speyer’s The Wheeler Building in Downtown Brooklyn.

Whittle School & Studios, run by Chris Whittle, is considering taking all of the 622K SF space above the Macy's at 181 Livingston St. in Downtown Brooklyn, The Real Deal reports.

The deal has a 50% chance of closing, according to the publication. Tishman Speyer bought the space from Macy's in 2015, agreeing to reconfigure the department store on the lower floors and spend $500M to redevelop the newly vacant space above. Asking rents for the large space range between $60 per SF and $70 per SF.

Whittle School & Studios, which describes itself as the world's first global school, last year reached a deal to convert the 600K SF former Intelsat headquarters in Washington, D.C., into a school for 2,500 students. Whittle has plans to open campuses in more than 30 cities over the next seven years.

Avenues, at 259 10th Ave., has been considered a draw for wealthy home buyers in Chelsea.

There has been plenty of residential development in Downtown Brooklyn in recent years, including vast numbers of luxury rental buildings and Extell Development's 138 Willoughby St. at the City Point megaproject.
