| Speaking of construction, we were on hand last night at the Yale Club as Professional Women in Construction honored three men behind prolific projects in NYC: Stephen Shane, CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp., for the overhaul of the Roosevelt Island Aerial Tramway; and NYC Dept. of Design + Construction commissioner David Burney and deputy commissioner David Resnick for the NYC Police Academy and the Public Safety Answering Center II. | Over 125 from the construction industry attended. The Roosevelt Island Aerial Tramway is being suspended for extensive modernization and upgrades (did you know that when it opened in '76, it was only projected to have a 17-year lifespan? It was the answer to the oft-delayed subway to Roosevelt Island, yet it still carries 2M passengers annually). Construction began in December on the $750M phase one of the Police Academy in College Point, which will consolidate training facilities into one state-of-the-art campus upon its '13 completion. That year also marks the projected finish of the 550k-SF Public Safety Answering Center in the Bronx, which will augment and provide redundancy to current 9-1-1 services and strengthen the City's ability to maintain communication in case of a natural disaster or large-scale emergency. |
