LPC Approves Relocation Of Historic Tin Building, Paving The Way For South Street Seaport Project

The Howard Hughes Corp’s South Street Seaport project has cleared another hurdle.

On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved HHC’s long-standing plan to relocate the historic Tin Building, which will function as a food hall when it’s rebuilt.

Originally constructed in 1907 and used as a fish market, the Tin Building has seen better days of late, sitting vacant since 2006 and being heavily damaged in Hurricane Sandy, NY Yimby reports.

The LPC is generally wary of relocation projects for historic buildings, but given the building’s urgent need for structural repairs and the in-depth plan presented by HHC, it decided to make an exception. Members of the LPC were quick to point out this was a special case and would not set a precedent.

Chris Curry, HHC’s point man on the project, tells NY Yimby he’s hopeful the project will now be able to go before the City Planning Commission in April, back to Community Board 1, and then back to City Planning for final approval in May. [NYY]
