A former City Council member has been charged with criminal mischief, harassment and menacing after allegedly threatening commercial tenants in a building he owns in Brooklyn.
Kendall Stewart is accused of breaking down the door at hookah bar 1744 Lounge in East Flatbush last week and threatening a man, The New York Post reports.
The dispute was about city fines, per the newspaper. The business, previously known as Cafe Omar, was issued more than $5K in fines in 2016 because of problems with an obscured exit and operating without the right permit.
The business was in compliance as of 2017, however, according to the newspaper.
“I’m gonna come back here and take care of you,” Stewart allegedly said on Friday to the man. He returned the next day with three others — one of whom had a gun — and threatened a woman who was working there.
Stewart was arrested Saturday. Stewart served on the council as a Democrat until 2009, losing his seat the same year two of his aides admitted to the embezzlement of $200K of taxpayer money.
