A unique moment in Manhattan development history occurred on W. 57th St: the crane arrived at 111 W 57th St, and it's the tallest freestanding crane ever used on a project in New York City. Developer JDS made the announcement via Instagram, stating that the record-breaking 220-foot crane will help the tower begin its rise to 1,428 feet. The SHoP-designed supertall has undergone several height adjustments, but will stand taller than 432 Park Ave, NY YIMBY reported. But once completed it still won't be the second-tallest building in town (behind 1 WTC), because the Nordstrom Tower, just a block away, will stand nearly 100 feet taller. However, with help from its record-making crane and an army of skilled laborers, 111 W 57th St may still be able to claim the title as No. 2 for a short while before the Nordstrom Tower is complete.
