Workers in the Seaport District of Lower Manhattan have become the latest employment casualties in the citywide effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Howard Hughes Corp. and Seaport Hospitality LLC laid off 316 employees in the Seaport District, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification the company filed with the state. It cited business issues arising from COVID-19 as the reason for the mass layoff.
Seaport District is a commercial center previously called South Street Seaport and includes restaurants such as The Fulton, Malibu Farm and Cobble&Co.
The Seaport District announced widespread temporary closings of its stores and restaurants. Carla Sozzani’s 10 Corso Como, a retail center at the Seaport District, shuttered amid the pandemic on April 1, Women’s Wear Daily reported.
