Facebook recently announced it is building a new data center in Fort Worth, TX and reports now indicate that the facility will be 100% powered by renewable energy. Facebook’s VP of engineering Jay Parikh said "We worked with Citi Energy, Alterra Power Corporation, and Starwood Energy Group to bring 200 [megawatts] of new wind energy to the Texas grid as part of this deal. The wind development will be 17K acres, located less than 100 miles away." The company has made a sustained effort to make its data centers run on 50% renewable energy by 2018 with the ultimate goal of full renewability. Over the last three years, Facebook says it has saved more than $2B in infrastructure costs thanks to the effort. The company shares the designs for its data centers through the Open Compute Project, which has 200 members collaborating on sustainable data center technologies. [MOT]
