M&As and IPOs are up, and venture firms are raising new funds. New Atlantic Ventures managing partner John Backus says the trends show a virtuous cycle: Good exits lead to good returns, then to more fund raising. Another trend: vc's are holding onto their successful portfolio companies longer as they build stronger businesses; when they go public, investors get a better return. John’s Reston-based firm has made two investments this year (BlockScore in Menlo Park and Brand Yourself in New York) and expects to do 3-5 more before the end of the year. NAV has raised $45M toward a $125M fund, the firm’s fourth.
