How Commercial Real Estate Can Pave A Greener Future

Commercial real estate is experiencing a sea change in demand for space. Not necessarily the amount of space, or even the location, but the way each building interacts with its environment has become a selling point for developers. Join us for Bisnow’s Sustainability Forum on April 27 to learn the latest about how technology is improving commercial real estate.

Read on for some thoughts from one of our expert panelists, TrueGrid Pavers CEO Barry Stiles.

Houston has never been known as an eco-friendly city, but that's changing as people see that sustainable products benefit their daily lives, Barry says. His product is a system of interlocking plastic grids in a circle design that developers lay on the ground and fill with crushed granite or grass to create super-strong parking lot paving without using concrete. This reduces heat and flooding in communities.

TrueGrid now has millions of SF in the ground across the US from coast to coast. Clients like Google, Whole Foods and the US Military are raving about the results. With cred like that, it’s easy to see why it’s catching on.

Barry tells us that in Houston, AutoNation is developing a three-acre parking lot where it's eliminated 100% of its detention pond, saving 30k SF and the cost of building and maintenance thanks to the TrueGrid system. White Oak Music Hall, a new outdoor amphitheater on the Little White Oak Bayou with a Downtown skyline backdrop, will have over 200k SF of TrueGrid in parking, in front of the stage and on the outdoor patio. Several self-storage facilities are installing acres of TrueGrid for RV and boat storage.

Barry reckons that sustainable TrueGrid projects have saved over 10 million pounds of plastic from the landfill, and reduced C02 emission by close to 30,000 tons by eliminating cement and concrete and the potential use of toxic asphalt coal tar sealants in many municipalities across the US.
