Retailers Are Uneasy About The Presidential Election

This year's super-charged political race is causing some retailers concern, as they fear consumers will be spending more time this year contemplating politics than doing their holiday shopping.

The contentious primaries led to the selection of two of the most historically unfavorable candidates in US history, RetailDive reports, and politics are dominating headlines even more than usual for an election year. According to Fung Global Retail & Technology’s August survey, the majority of industry leaders believe the election will have a strong impact on consumer spending, yet they are completely divided on how.

Historically, foot traffic tends to fall between 6% and 12% during election week, and slowly pick up afterwards. Yet this election season is anything but typical, and experts are saying retailers need to stay nimble to make the most of this holiday season. [RD]
