Cushman & Wakefield First Major Brokerage To Reimburse Travel For Abortions

Chicago-based Cushman & Wakefield is first among the top brokerages in the U.S. to say that it will cover the cost of travel for abortions following last week's overturning of Roe v. Wade in the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a statement to Bisnow, Cushman confirmed the move:

“As a company centered around its people, Cushman & Wakefield has an unwavering commitment to supporting the health and well-being of our employees and their families. Believing that all our employees should have equal access to safe and consistent healthcare, regardless of where they live, the firm is expanding healthcare benefits to reimburse up to $2,000 of travel-related expenses for U.S. medical care, including reproductive healthcare, that is not available within 100 miles of an employee’s home.”

The news was first reported by UK-based real estate news outlet EG.

Earlier this week, the firm declined to comment on whether it would make policy changes in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling taking away the constitutional right to abortion.

Many of commercial real estate’s biggest and best-known companies have remained silent, at least publicly, on whether they will alter policies to account for this change.

Cushman & Wakefield's home state of Illinois is bordered by states that have either banned abortion already or where the medical procedure is threatened, according to data from The Guardian.
