Rate Hike Not Likely At Fed’s Meeting This Week

The Federal Reserve is meeting Tuesday for a two-day policy meeting, and experts largely expect them to keep interest rates unchanged.

Fed officials are likely to focus their attention on how and when to reduce their mortgage and Treasury securities holdings, the Wall Street Journal reports. It will also be important to see how the Fed addresses recent economic weakness, including the country experiencing its weakest economic expansion in three years this past quarter and falling consumer confidence.

The Fed raised interest rates a quarter-point in March to a range of 0.75% to 1% and signaled two more increases this year, and while Fed officials have indicated disappointing economic data points have not changed their rate outlook, all eyes are watching to see how they will respond to the recent economic slowdown.
