DALLAS: Grocer Expands into Texas

Yesterday, the Idaho-based WinCo Foods grocery chain opened two new locations in the Dallas-area with plans to add three more in the ‘burbs by March ’15. The stores are the first in Texas (the eighth state for WinCo) and are among a nationwide expansion, which should add about nine stores annually, says WinCo Foods VP Michael Read. The two new Dallas-area stores are about 95k SF each, but future stores may be about 85k SF, Mike tells us. The chain has almost 100 stores, as well as four distribution centers. It's also building a new distribution center in Phoenix to service its stores in Arizona, Southern California, and Southern Nevada.

Venture Commercial’s Kevie Beard, Theo Thompson, Jonathan Cooper, DWC Commercial Properties’ Caroline Woodbury, and Venture’s McGregor Converse were the dealmakers in the Dallas area. DWC engaged Venture to find sites for a mystery grocer (better than a mystery meat at the grocer). For a year, they searched for locations without knowing who the client was. Each store needs about 10 to 12 acres. Venture repped WinCo in negotiations for the five DFW sites (with more to come) and Caroline, along with DWC prez Don Woodbury, coordinated acquisition, development, and entitlement of the properties.
