Amsterdam Colonizes NY Data Centers

The original European colonizers of New York are doing it again. This time in its data centers. (The Dutch were the first European colonizers in NY. We know—freshman history was a long time ago.)

Sabey Data Center Properties just landed and launched the Amsterdam Internet Exchange—the neutral data pipeline that acts as an exchange between major networks (and not a place to trade wooden clogs and delicious pastries)—at its 1M SF Intergate.Manhattan facility. It's a boon for Sabey since AMS-IX will only have two other data centers in NY and NJ for its network, says Sabey's Dan Meltzer.

AMS-IX itself already signed Netflix through its network. And Dan—pictured, right, with AMS-IX CEO Job Witteman and the Mayor of Amsterdam Eberhard van der Laan—tells us getting the IX network there will help Sabey lure further networks. By attracting carriers, he says, “they're kind of like a honeypot.” Since this deal, Sabey has inked deals with an unnamed financial services firm and a large enterprise company. This on top of current data center build-outs for Datagram and Windstream.
