Employees: 233,000

Sales/Revenue: $39.6B

By far No. 1, healthcare giant HCA is made up of locally managed facilities that include more than 250 hospitals and freestanding surgery centers in 20 states and the UK.

2. Community Health Systems Inc

Employees: 137,000

Sales/Revenue: $19.4B

The organization’s affiliates own, operate or lease 158 hospitals in 22 states with about 27,000 beds.

3. LifePoint Health Inc

Employees: 40,000

Sales/Revenue: $5.2B

LifePoint owns and operates 72 hospital campuses in 22 states; more than 40 post-acute service providers and facilities; and more than 30 outpatient centers, including urgent care centers, diagnostic imaging centers, ambulatory surgery centers and radiation oncology programs.

4. Brookdale Senior Living

Employees: 82,000

Sales/Revenue: $4.9B

Brookdale services about 100,000 residents in more than 1,000 properties in 47 states. It operates in every senior housing sector.

5. AMSurg Corp

Employees: 12,400

Sales/Revenue: $2.5B

With more than 2,000 physicians at 245-plus ambulatory surgery centers nationwide, AMSurg is a leader in that sector, which includes endoscopy, ophthalmology and orthopedics.
