Houston Housing Authority chairman Lance Gilliam plans to resign his position at the next board meeting, nearly two years before the end of his term. The announcement follows a dispute with Mayor Sylvester Turner over an affordable housing project in an upscale neighborhood between The Galleria and Tanglewood, sparking criticism from the Mayor about the operation's leadership.

Last week in a City Council meeting, the Mayor announced his intention to change the Authority's leadership, reports the Houston Chronicle. Mayor Turner will appoint the new chairman.

The Mayor declined to bring the heavily disputed Tanglewood project to City Council for a vote, claiming the project's $240k/unit price tag was too expensive. The $56M project would've created 233 units in a so-called "high-opportunity neighborhood." [Chron]
