The University of Texas System is putting 300 acres on the market.
The tract of undeveloped land in south central Houston stirred some controversy — UT began acquiring it in 2015, intending to create a new campus including a data science institute. But the University of Houston balked at the new competition so close to its doorstep. UH Board of Regents Chairman Tilman Fertitta called the proposed campus "an unnecessary duplication of resources that didn't align with the state's plan for higher education."
Although Houston business leaders rallied behind UT's plan, UT Chancellor William McRaven decided to scrap the campus entirely.
UT issued a Request for Qualifications Monday to sell the land around Buffalo Speedway and Willowbend Boulevard.
