Chevron Acquires 77 Acres In Howard Hughes’ Bridgeland

Chevron U.S.A. has purchased more than 77 acres in Bridgeland Central from Howard Hughes Holdings, with potential plans to establish a research and development campus on the property, the companies announced Tuesday.

Bridgeland Central is a 925-acre hub within Bridgeland, Howard Hughes’ master-planned community in northwest Harris County.

"Chevron's acquisition marks a pivotal moment for Bridgeland as the community enters its next phase of development as a leading job center for the region," Jim Carman, president of the Houston region for Howard Hughes, said in a news release. "Bridgeland is poised to benefit from the influx of businesses and their employees seeking to live and work in a centralized location.”

Chevron was attracted by the live-work possibilities Bridgeland has to offer, Chevron Head of Corporate Real Estate Daniel Abate said in the release.

"We take pride in contributing to the communities where we live and work and are excited about the potential of establishing a research and development campus in Bridgeland to advance our work toward achieving a lower carbon energy future,” Abate said.

The acquisition follows the announcement last year of the first phase of Bridgeland Central in Cypress. Phase 1 will start with the construction of Village Green at Bridgeland Central, which will include the community's first H-E-B and the first mass timber office development for both Howard Hughes and the Greater Houston area, according to Howard Hughes.

Chevron last year denied it would be moving its headquarters to Houston following its sale of a 92-acre campus in San Ramon, California, despite moving about 200 employees from California to Houston.

The company has significantly ramped up operations in Texas in recent years due to oil production growth in the Permian Basin, Bloomberg reported, and now counts 7,000 employees and contractors in the Houston area. But a Chevron spokesperson told Bloomberg its California location and its central Houston office complex “will continue business as usual.”
