Upmc Has Added Sports Surgery Clinic To Its Growing Irish Portfolio.

Dublin private sports clinic Sports Surgery Clinic has been acquired by U.S. healthcare operator UPMC, as it continues to snap up private healthcare facilities that own their own real estate across Ireland.

The Pittsburgh-based medical specialist opened its first international facility in Waterford in November 2020 and has since expanded rapidly across Dublin and Ireland.

Sports Surgery Clinic, which is located in the north Dublin suburb of Santry, is an independent hospital focused on joint replacement and surgery for sport-related soft tissue injuries.

Backers include former Ireland and Manchester United footballer Kevin Moran and his surgeon brother Ray Moran, with the latter founding the business in 2007.

The clinic now has space for 101 patients and there are more than 40 consultants focused on orthopaedic surgery and allied specialties working at the facility, as well as more than 400 nurses, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals, the Business Post reported.

“SSC will complement our existing network of orthopaedic care in the U.S. and Europe and ensures that we can provide access to care to more patients, close to home,” UPMC International President Charles Bogosta added.

The purchase of the Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin marks the fourth hospital acquisition in Ireland by the Pittsburgh-based healthcare provider and is part of a wider expansion across Ireland. The three hospitals currently owned by UPMC are located in Waterford, Kilkenny and Clane in Kildare.

The healthcare operator also has two advanced radiotherapy centres, three sports medicine clinics and several outpatient facilities across Ireland.

In March 2022, UPMC and the Technological University of the Shannon announced that they were partnering to create UPMC Sports Medicine clinics in Limerick and Tipperary.

In October 2022, UPMC and Connacht GAA, the governing body of the Gaelic games, partnered to open the UPMC Institute for Health in Mayo.

The facility offers physical therapy and rehabilitation programmes for patients and became the first UPMC facility in the west of Ireland.
