It’s election day, folks, and a big issue for the 2nd Ward is the future of the 28-acre former A. Finkl & Sons steel plant in Lincoln Park and the area’s 115-acre planned manufacturing district. The six aldermanic candidates have expressed an openness to amending the PMD, DNAInfo reports, but neighborhood groups worry they’re being left out of the planning process for Finkl’s future with demolition imminent. What’s been talked about: dropping the PMD to make way for residential development (adding a supposed $13M more in annual property taxes); creating a high-tech manufacturing and R&D area like what’s happening over on Goose Island; transfer of the PMD to another part of the city (too tricky, some argue, given the amount of existing industrial businesses); and even an 80k SF Finch’s brewery and taproom.
