Police Say Threat Against Hancock Tower Wasn't Credible

200 Clarendon St., Previously Known As The John Hancock Tower, Is Boston's Tallest Building.

While the Boston Police Department continues to monitor 200 Clarendon St., formerly known as Boston’s John Hancock Tower, the organization says an earlier threat to the building isn't credible.

Police were alerted Thursday morning to a potential threat at the 790-foot tower, Boston’s tallest. The force had a significant presence in both the building’s 200 Clarendon St. and 120 St. James St. lobbies. The building remained open, but Bain Capital, which leases 263K SF at 200 Clarendon, told employees to work from home.

A spokesperson for building owner Boston Properties declined to comment and deferred inquiries to the Boston Police Department.

Local, state and federal authorities are working together to find the source of the threat. The police expect to maintain a presence at the 1.7M SF tower throughout the day as a precaution.
