Last year, NJ transit commuter trains had a whopping 213 major mechanical failures and broke down every 83,815 miles. And here's the thing. It's still not as bad as Boston.
Boston had 219 major failures, according to the National Transit Database. However, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo rang a skeptical note to the Boston Globe because there is no uniform reporting for mechanical failures, meaning "what one rail service provider considers a failure, another one may not."
