| The AIA projects a decline in US non-residential architectural billings this year, but expects firms in the Northeast to outperformthe three other regions. In December, it registered 55.3 on the index, a very encouraging healthy number, says AIA spokesmanScott Frank. In New England, meanwhile, 2011 prospects are even a bit brighter based on the strength of the institutional sector, especially healthcare, which the AIA says will outpace commercial construction. In Boston alone, new construction is underway at MGH (above, MGH director of planning and construction David Hanitchak at the new $579M patient facility), Children's, and a new project was recently completed at Dana Farber. For the US, the AIA forecasts non-residential constructionto fall off by 2% this year, with commercial down 4.2%, and institutional off by 0.2%, although healthcare will grow 1.1%. |
