Getting ready for the Shanghai World Expo that opened Saturday was a monumental task that included the re-design of that city's Bund, a riverside promenade. Chan Krieger NBBJ's Alex Krieger(right, whom we snapped at a ULI event several weeks ago with Goulston & Storrs Matt Kiefer) designed the project that submerged a surface road and installed new parkland. It was completed three weeks ago. Alex, also chair of the HGSD urban planning and design department, says it's exciting to be in touch with the rapid urbanization of places like China, where 20-30M people move into cities each year. ?It requires a lot of thinking for the growth to lead to a better quality of life, not just more buildings.?
