It will have a unique operating room, featuring a central core surrounded by pods. Also in 2014, RDK expects to get underway on the expansion of the emergency department at Falmouth Hospital. (The only time more ERs got redone was when Tim Gunn broke his arm.)

JACA's Katie Arruda and Florence DiJohnson tell us the Quincy-based firm has designed renovations and expansions for the 20k SF Dedham Medical Center and the 15k SF Jordan Hospital emergency department. (JACA has focused primarily on healthcare design for over 20 years.) As the US healthcare system comes under pressure to deliver quality care with the best technology but declining profit margins, good design can boost efficiency while improving the patient experience and reducing staff fatigue.

Newly minted Newmark Grubb Knight Frank director Joe Pearce focuses on life science leasing and tells us that East Cambridge and Kendall Square continue to be very hot markets. Tenants, especially smaller companies who can't handle the rising rents, are look at outlying locations like Lexington for lower rates.

NStar's Robert McDonough (right, with Andrew Coffin) says the utility company is working with many of the region's major hospitals on their energy efficiency programs. The goal is for the hospitals to save 4% to 8% on power that runs lighting, HVAC, and air-flow controls. (Fewer breezes up our backless hospital gowns is always good.)
