Campus police officer Sean Collier, who was killed by Boston Marathon bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on April 18, 2013, was honored with a 190-ton memorial unveiled in Cambridge, MA, on Wednesday. It's the result of a collaboration between MIT architecture professor Meejin Yoon, structural engineering professor John Oschendorf, students, and a construction crew led by Collier's brother. Over 100 potential designs were submitted. The final design includes 32 pieces of polished granite from a New Hampshire quarry, forming five radial walls that resemble an open hand, to represent service and generosity. There's an open space in the center in the exact shape of a stone built by MIT's hiking group, the Outing Club, in tribute to Collier, an involved member. [MIT]
